Just a few days ago, the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore — one of the world’s most important security forums — was taking place. Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi delivered a speech there, responding to a claim put forward by China’s Foreign Ministry in May — namely, the accusation that Japan’s strengthening of its defence capabilities amounts to “new militarism,” with China also calling on Asia-Pacific countries to jointly resist it.
